The Benefit
Of Adding Crushed Eggshells
To Your
Bird Feeder
By DANIELLE RAMOS-SULLIVAN
Like humans, birds require extra calcium to reproduce and care for their offspring. However, acquiring adequate calcium from nature alone can be challenging for them.
While you can buy calcium-fortified birdseed, a simple and effective way to give your feathery friends an additional source of calcium is to add crushed eggshells to their feeder.
This addition is especially beneficial for birds that don't usually consume birdseed, like robins. To prepare eggshells for feeding, rinse them and bake at 250 degrees Fahrenheit.
After 10 minutes, remove eggshells from the oven and let them cool. Then, crush them up into small bits, add them to your birdseed, or offer them separately in a feeder or a tray.
