The Best Layout If You Have A Long And Narrow Living Room
By ALEXANDRIA TAYLOR
Some homes feature living rooms that are long and narrow, and as a result, you may have trouble figuring out the best location for your furniture to create a cohesive and functional design. Developing a strategy for how to approach a long and narrow living room is the best way to ensure you get the perfect layout.
Placing furniture around permanent features such as doorways, windows, and stairs establishes natural flow and creates walkways; however, avoid congestion in your furniture layout by properly spacing major furniture pieces, at least 18 to 24 inches apart. Ideally, passageways should be between 36 and 48 inches wide.
With any long and narrow room, you’ll want to break the room down into multiple areas depending on your needs and lifestyle; if you're a fan of entertaining, a conversation area with sofas and a coffee table makes the most sense. Creating zones makes smaller, more functional areas, and using area rugs, open shelving, and plants can create division between spaces.
