The Best Time To Deadhead Hosta Flowers
By PEG ALOI
The best time to deadhead hosta flowers is after they have completed their blooming period, which typically lasts three to four weeks, depending on the variety and the weather.
As the blossoms begin to fade and the petals start to drop, it's an ideal moment to trim the flowering stems to keep the plant looking neat and orderly for the rest of the season.
For a tidy appearance, cut the stems just below the top layer of leaves using bypass pruners or garden snips. Lightly water the plant after pruning to help it recover from stress.
Although some gardeners choose to let the stems die back naturally, this can lead to unsightly dried and brown stems that may require more challenging pruning later on.
