The Best Way To Store Bird Seed To Extend Its Shelf Life

Consuming expired bird seed can make birds sick and or even be fatal. To avoid harming your feathered friends, properly store bird seed to protect it from the weather and pests.
When properly stored, bird seed can maintain its freshness for 6 to 12 months, since most feed consists of hardy ingredients like sunflower seeds, cracked corn, and millet.
It's critical to keep bird food stored in an airtight container with a lid that seals tightly, keeping moisture, insects, and rodents out.
Bird seed storage containers should be made of durable materials, such as metal, glass, or thick, sturdy plastic (rodents can gnaw through thinner plastic.)
If you use a metal container, choose a high-quality, galvanized metal that won't warp over time. Deformed metal lids can let in moisture and lead to mold growth.
You should also store your bird seed inside. Kitchens or basements help extra bird seed to avoid direct sunlight, extreme temperatures, and other adverse weather effects.
If you choose to store your feed outdoors, put it in a shady spot, and add extra weight on top to make it harder for wildlife to get in, or for the wind to topple the container.
