The Crucial Water Heater Maintenance Task You're Likely Overlooking

Malfunctioning water heaters can mean hefty repair or replacement bills, costing hundreds to thousands of dollars. This can be avoided with a simple maintenance routine.
The often-overlooked anode rod offsets high temperatures and moisture conditions, creating an environment that prevents corrosion buildup on the tank.
Replacing the rod every two to five years can significantly extend the tank's lifespan. Before you begin, turn off the breaker, close the water supply valve, and drain the tank.
Once empty, locate the anode rod at the top of the tank near the hot water outlet line, then use a socket wrench or breaker bar to remove it.
After replacing the rod, use Teflon tape to create a seal, tighten it, and close the drain valve. You can then turn the water and power back on.
