The DIY Upgrade That Will Take A Dollar Tree Birdhouse To The Next Level
By RACHEL CRAFT
This quick and easy hack will turn your budget Dollar Tree birdhouse into a smorgasbord that birds will flock to. All you need is some peanut butter, birdseed, and a butter knife.
Take your Dollar Tree birdhouse or any simple wooden birdhouse; apply a thin, even layer of peanut butter across its surface; and smooth it out using your butter knife.
Then, toss birdseed suitable for the specific birds in your garden over it until it's fully coated. Hang your new birdhouse buffet in a tree, and birds will be nibbling in no time.
Peanut butter is safe to give to your birds, and it’s a nutritious supplement to their diet, especially in winter when food is scarce and birds need extra calories to stay warm.
Experts recommend that you only give birds peanut butter in colder months; otherwise, it can get too soft and stick to their beaks, or the oil can suffocate fertilized eggs.
Always check the ingredients when buying birdseed because, while they’re safe for birds, some cheap mixes include seeds like oats and red millet, which most birds won’t eat.
Choose the type of seed you’ll use according to the type of bird you want to attract. You can find charts showing which species like which seeds in The Old Farmer's Almanac.
