For homeowners constantly on the lookout for the best way to enlarge their tiny bathroom, HGTV’s Hilary Farr has the perfect space-saving yet chic solution: a sliding barn door.
In “Tough Love with Hilary Farr,” she mounted a barn door on the wall outside a small bathroom. This removed the need for an inward-swinging door and maximized every inch of space.
Most walls don’t have to be reframed to fit smaller barn doors, saving time and money. It also opens up the layout options available, since the door is positioned outside the room.
On the downside, the door doesn’t fully close or lock so privacy can be an issue, and additional bracing where the door is mounted is almost always required to support its weight.
The rustic barn aesthetic also might not suit more modern homes. Instead, consider using more sleek, barn-style doors such as those with single panels or frosted glass inserts.
