The Drawbacks Of Putting A Fountain In Your Birdbath
By SANDY BAKER
Adding a fountain to a birdbath helps to attract birds and creates a nice aesthetic. However, there are drawbacks to consider — namely, maintenance and cost.
Buying a fountain is more expensive than just a birdbath due to the cost of the pump. If said pump is electric, you'll also be paying for electricity to keep it working.
The pump also requires careful management and could fail without it, requiring a replacement. The mechanism will need to be removed, cleaned, and sanitized routinely.
In addition, the pump's movement of water will cause evaporation more readily than just a standing container of water, so you'll need to monitor and fill it promptly.
Furthermore, you may need to remove and bring the fountain component into your home during winter to prevent water from freezing within the pump and damaging it.
