Even experts, like Ben and Erin Napier of HGTV’s “Home Town,” occasionally make mistakes. As viewers, we get the chance to learn from their blunders and get advice for the future.

The Napiers recommend measuring the space two or three times before cutting and laying tile to prevent it from lifting out of place and causing additional hazards and obstacles.

If you’re working with a rectangular or square-shaped area, find the square footage by measuring the length and width of the room and multiplying them together.

If the area is round, first measure the length of one side of the circle to the other to find the diameter. Then divide the diameter by two, square the result, and multiply by Pi.

When it comes time to purchase the tiles, the Napiers say to obtain all materials needed before starting the installation process. We suggest always ordering a little extra.
