The Expensive Marble HGTV's Mina Starsiak Hawk Adores
By JESSICA DANIELS
As one of the stars of HGTV's series "Good Bones," Mina Starsiak Hawk has renovated a lot of kitchens, and she loves using Carrara marble for countertops.
Carrara marble countertops are carved from a single block of natural stone and have lovely blue-gray veins running through the white, making every piece uniquely patterned.
Starsiak Hawk points out to House Beautiful, "I'm in love with Carrara marble — it's just beautiful, but it's getting more expensive and it's a lot more difficult to maintain."
As a porous, "soft" stone, Carrara marble is easily scratched, chipped, stained, and dulled. It must be resealed every six months, especially if the counters get a lot of use.
Starsiak Hawk considers quartz an excellent alternative to marble, saying, "[Statuario quartz] has the same creamy look but it's more durable and easier to take care of."
