The Exterior Features That Are Making Your Home Look Old-Fashioned
By ERICA HAWBAKER
Red Brick
Red brick is classic yet terribly overused, and a fresh coat of white paint can do wonders in freshening up your brick exterior. Bolder, dark colors like navy blue and emerald green can add a sophisticated and elegant tone, and another popular option is lime washing, which gives a natural stone finish.
Angled Bay Windows
Angled bay windows protrude from homes, cannot regulate temperature as seasons change, and are expensive, as they require custom drapery. Some alternatives to give your home a more contemporary design, without sacrificing abundant natural light, include three-lite slider windows, casement windows, and picture windows.
Ornate Front Doors
Front doors with frosted glass, ornate iron, and oval cutouts in the wood scream 1990s. Clean glass elements and bold colors add modern flair to front doors, and you can create striking details by contrasting a dark door with light trim work, or by playing around with finishes like gloss or matte paint.
