The One Ingredient You Shouldn't Add To Hummingbird Nectar
By PAMELA SIEGEL
Even though hummingbirds are attracted to the color red, experts suggest that you should never add red dye to hummingbird nectar.
Sheri Williamson, who wrote "Attracting and Feeding Hummingbirds," discourages adding any type of dye, even food coloring, as
it may potentially be
harmful to the birds.
Williamson says that homemade nectar is superior to premade products containing red dye. In lieu of red dye, she suggests buying a feeder with a red base to attract hummingbirds.
