The One Type Of Mattress That Requires A Box Spring
By PAMELA SIEGEL
Traditional mattresses
with coils inside, otherwise known as innerspring mattresses, are best supported by box springs. Without a box spring, they’re unlikely to last very long.
Box springs are shock absorbers for when you move around on the bed at night. They easily fit into bed frames, and sometimes have a few wooden slats under them for extra support.
The support provided by box springs is necessary for comfort and longevity as they keep innerspring mattresses from sagging in the frame and breaking down prematurely.
A four-poster or canopy bed can also benefit from a box spring, but box springs can also be a personal preference since they tend to sit higher than modern platform beds.
