The Patio Lighting Mistake That's Attracting Unwanted Pests
By LILLY PALTSEV
Relaxing on your porch can be lovely, but the lights may be attracting wasps, hornets, and yellow jackets to your home. Luckily, there are ways you can reduce their presence.
While not all stinging insects are attracted to outdoor lights, common species like European and bald-faced hornets are, and it is suspected that Asian giant hornets are as well.
They are drawn to lights because the brightness helps them navigate and the heat emitted by the bulbs increases their energy. The lights disrupts their natural flying patterns too.
Replacing your bulbs with LEDs, which produce less heat, or opting for lamps that are yellow or amber-colored will make your lights far less attractive to these stinging insects.
