The Popular Flower That May Be Attracting Mosquitoes To Your Yard
By Clara Ngu
Some flowers attract more mosquitoes than others, like tank bromeliads. With their tubular water-collecting system, the flowers often attract mosquitoes and are best avoided.
This variety has the downside of holding enough water for mosquitoes to breed. All mosquito eggs need is water to hatch, so this standing water is the perfect hiding spot for them.
If you plant tank bromeliads, you’ll need to hose your flowers to flush out eggs, spray them with vegetable oil to kill the larvae, or add larvicide treatment to your water supply.
For a beautiful garden with fewer bugs and less maintenance, try planting marigolds, a vibrant flower that releases a strong odor that repels mosquitoes and other pests.
