The Refreshing Outdoor Feature Hummingbirds Can't Get Enough Of
By NAOMI MEZA
Besides planting their favorite flowers to attract hummingbirds to your garden, consider adding a mister to your outdoor oasis for hummingbirds to drink, bathe, and cool off.
Hummingbirds’ weak legs and feet make it hard for them to use other birdbaths, while misters allow them to bathe in flight. The gentle spray also doesn’t drench them in water.
Choose a mister with either an impeller or impingement adjustable water nozzle to control how much water it releases. Impeller nozzles are more common in residential misters.
Impingement nozzles produce a finer mist, while impeller nozzles are less expensive and easier to maintain. Both produce atomized water droplets — ideal for hummingbirds
to drink.
Get a cleanable nozzle rather than a traditional one so you can easily remove debris and buildup. This will help maintain your mister’s performance and extend its lifespan.
Make sure the mister’s hose is 50 to 60 feet long so you can wrap it around trees or patio columns. Place it near flowers or feeders in the shade so it doesn't overheat.
