The Right Way To Lubricate Your Garage Door Springs
By MICHELLE ROBERTS-GARCIA
If your garage door springs start squeaking, rusting, or showing signs of wear, it may be time to lubricate them. To do this properly, follow the advice from handyman Brett Labeka.
Labeka suggests that the garage door needs to be lubricated at least every six months. If the door is noisy or not rolling smoothly, additional greasing may also be required.
To grease your garage door springs, purchase products with a thicker solution that sticks to the metal for optimum protection and motion, such as lithium grease or silicone spray.
Since your springs sit directly above and on the center underside of your door, get a ladder or stool to reach them, then apply the lubricant. For best results, use aerosol sprays.
Spread the lubricant around the spring with a putty knife, covering the portions facing the door when greasing it. Open and close the door a few times to distribute the lubricant.
This also helps reduce friction and avoid rusting, which prevents the springs from wearing down quickly, losing tension, making noise, and having shorter lifespans.
