The Trendy Countertops HGTV's Mike Holmes Isn't In A Rush To Install

Although marble countertops are the epitome of timeless elegance, according to HGTV star Mike Holmes, they're a home upgrade that's actually a waste of money.
Marble is quite susceptible to stains and scratches and requires frequent resealing. "When left untreated and exposed to the elements [it] will darken over time," Holmes said.
In addition, marble is porous and will absorb and retain fluid. This means the counter’s luxurious appeal will fade quickly, so only use the material in low-traffic areas.
Holmes' go-to alternative to high-maintenance marble is quartz. The material is non-porous, less likely to stain, doesn't need to be sealed, and comes at a lower price point.
