The Unexpected Citrus Fruit That Can Help Your Plants Thrive
By CHARLOTTE SEARS
While you may be aware of the benefits of limestone, lime powder works just as well to change the pH of the soil, increase nutrient uptake, and prevent the soil from drying out.
Since lime powder is acidic, you can use it to adjust the pH of your soil. Most plants thrive between 6.2 and 6.8, but some, like azaleas and gardenias, prefer a more acidic soil.
Changing the pH of the soil will also change your hydrangea blooms to a lovely pink color. One 6.75-pound bag of powder can adjust 135 square feet of soil for up to four weeks.
Use this trick in the fall by sprinkling an even layer on top of the soil before mixing it in about a foot deep. Finally, spray the soil with water to help activate the lime.
Before adding lime to your garden, use a pH tester to determine if your soil needs an acid boost, and if so, how much should be applied. You can pick one up on Amazon for $21.
