The Untold Truth Of The Home Edit's Joanna Teplin
By EMILY KAMMERLOHR
Schooling
Joanna graduated with a degree in film from The University of California, Santa Barbara in 2001. Though there aren't any courses available in reality TV or organizing, we're sure that if Joanna wanted to teach a class on either, enrollment would be through the roof.
First Job
When Joanna finished at UC Santa Barbara, her first job out of college didn't have anything to do with her college degree in film. Instead, she moved to San Francisco and managed a high-end, appointment only, boutique stationery shop called Union Street Papery.
Entrepreneurship
At age 22, Joanna started a greeting card company called, “he said. she said.” When that didn’t pan out, she opened a wedding planning business called “Joanna Teplin Invitation Consulting,” and finally “joanna and company,” which was her first foray into home life.
Meeting Clea
Joanna met her The Home Edit business partner, Clea Shearer, when a mutual friend decided to introduce the pair. They met for a four-hour lunch that ended with them becoming business partners, choosing a name, setting up a website, and designing a logo, “all before 8 pm,” Clea has said.
Fear Of Flying
Fear of flying is common, but Joanna takes it to the extreme. She watches the turbulence app closely to ensure the plane isn't acting funny, and often posts on Instagram about how she copes with her anxiety, even when things go wrong on the plane.
