The Vaseline Mistake You're Making With Your Hummingbird Feeder
By MARCO ROSSI
People often use natural remedies to ward off pests, but slathering your hummingbird feeder with Vaseline may harm the birds, keeping them away from your yard for good.
Vaseline makes the feeder slippery, making it impossible for ants to cross it to get to the food source, but the petroleum jelly can get on a hummingbird’s feathers.
This throws off their thermoregulation, which is when they drastically lower their body temperature at night to conserve their energy.
This is impossible for them to do if their feathers are slicked with jelly, and they can end up dying, overheating, or freezing from being unable to regulate their temperature.
