Think Twice Before Planting This Vibrant Hummingbird-Attracting Flower
By SAKSHI KHAITAN
Lantana camara’s drought-resistant blooms are a tempting addition to any garden. However, its rapid spread has earned it a place on many U.S. states’ invasive species lists.
After rooting, Lantana camara releases toxins into the soil that will damage or kill any neighboring
plants. Additionally, its
seeds can remain viable
for nearly 11 years.
It also loves to breed with local lantana species, which effectively destroys the native population, and it is incredibly hard to eliminate. Plus, it’s poisonous upon contact.
If your heart is set on planting Lantana camara, opt for a sterile variety. Alternatively, you can plant the species native to your area or choose a different flower altogether.
