This DIY Spiral Herb Garden Will Give Your Yard A Unique Upgrade
By MIMI MFUNDISI
A spiral herb garden can be built on any flat surface. You’ll need pavers, brick, stone, or wood, as well as a weed barrier, cardboard, topsoil, mulch, and water.
First, spread the weed barrier over the area. Then, lay the cardboard and draw an outline of your spiral on it, keeping in mind the width and volume of soil your herbs will need.
Now, lay your stones in a spiral and add topsoil in the gaps to support the walls and prepare the soil. You don't need cement, but the stones must be flat and stackable.
Plan where your herbs will go according to their needs and where the water will drain from – clockwise in the Northern Hemisphere and counter-clockwise in the Southern Hemisphere.
Rosemary, thyme, oregano, and sage need sunny conditions, so place them on top. Coriander, parsley, basil, and chives can be placed in the middle, as they need partial sun.
Mint needs some shade and space to spread, so place it at the bottom. Use companion plants, such as marigolds and zinnias, to add color, keep pests away, and attract pollinators.
Lastly, water the herbs very well. Use straw mulch to retain moisture or glass mulch for a colorful barrier for snails and slugs and to give your garden a nice finished look.
