This Easy-
To-Grow Groundcover Adds An Interesting Color To Your Yard
By NICK POLISHCHUK
While most ornamental grasses come in shades of green, the black mondo grass offers an onyx-colored foliage that immediately stands out and makes a striking accent in your yard.
Black mondo grass is hardy in USDA zones 6a through 9b, and this purple-flowering plant grows in clumps, reaching about a foot in height and width. It's also very easy to grow.
It isn't that picky about soil and will grow in sandy, loamy, and clay soils. However, it does prefer a substrate that's slightly acidic-to-neutral, with an ideal pH of 6.0 to 8.0.
Find a spot where the plants can get six hours of sun per day. Next, prepare the soil by removing weeds and loosening the substrate as far down as 10 inches beneath the surface.
Then, immerse the bare root plants in a container with water for several hours, letting the roots rehydrate. Dig holes at least 9 inches apart and deep enough to fit the roots.
Finally, place the roots in the soil, making sure that the crown is flush with the surface before backfilling and watering the plants.
