When doing laundry, it’s easy to forget if you left loose change or other miscellaneous things in your pockets. Even if you quickly remove loose items from the washer, there could still be more lodged inside that could be causing unknown damage, and this is what you should do about it.
Loose change can cause damage, since it’s small enough to get stuck in the drain hose and pump, leading to a leaking machine. Coins are made of metal and can easily get stuck in the machine, so the moment you hear a rattling sound, take action.
To remove coins from your washing machine, unplug the machine and check if your machine has a coin trap — which will likely be located at the bottom. Find the drain pump, unplug the electrical wire, pull the pump out with pliers, and turn it over so the coins fall out.
