This Snow-Shoveling Mistake Can Damage Your Yard And Garden
By KYLE SCHURMAN
When removing snow from your lawn, it's crucial to do so carefully. Too much frozen material piled on the grass could lead to a fungal infection and other added stress.
The same problem can plague your garden when you are removing snow from patios or decks, where the piles end up on landscaping and nearby perennial plants.
If you use salt to melt ice off your sidewalk or driveway, it could end up on the lawn, where it will sit all winter and create significant problems for the grass in the spring.
The shovel you use to remove snow can also damage your lawn. By inadvertently digging into the soil and tearing turf loose, you could cause long-term damage.
Falling snow during the winter shouldn't harm the plants to any significant degree. It actually provides a layer of protection for the grass when temperatures are especially low.
Using a snow blower might be the best option in order to avoid the snow piling up in one spot. The downside is that snow blowers also pick up gravel and salt.
