Tips To
Keep Your
St. Augustine Grass Healthy
By SARAH COGGAN
Growing and maintaining a healthy St. Augustine grass needs a routine regimen of deep watering, fertilization, mowing, and knowing what your specific type of grass needs to thrive.
First, mow the grass once it reaches a height of around four inches to promote deep and strong roots
that can better absorb
nutrients from the soil.
St. Augustine requires infrequent watering to establish roots, but water it at least weekly to ensure its vibrant color. Hotter temperatures may call for more frequent watering.
Routinely monitor your soil for low signs of moisture. Dry soil indicates that the grass has already absorbed the water or the water has evaporated in the sun.
St. Augustine also requires a fertilizer with a 3-1-2 ratio of nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium to thrive. Fertilize twice during the growing season that
runs from May to July.
Adding an iron soluble
to your soil in between fertilizing will enhance the color but will not promote new growth. It will ensure healthy, green grass without any overgrowth.
