Turn An Old Cooler Into The Ultimate Patio Piece For Entertaining
By CHRISTY RAE AMMONS
Dress up your old or basic hard-sided cooler by crafting a stylish chest for it that can stay on your patio. Add wheels to make it portable so you can move it wherever it’s needed.
This easy project requires some 2-by-4 wood boards, fence planks, a saw, a drill, screws, two hinges, and waterproof wood glue. Optional extras include handles and caster wheels.
Begin by removing the lid from your cooler, then cut some wood boards to fit the dimensions of the cooler’s base and lid. Use wood glue and screws to assemble all the parts.
Make a frame for the cooler lid with four planks, and screw the lid into it. Join four more planks into a rectangular frame for the cooler base, and attach double planks for legs.
Create a support reinforced with extra planks across the middle for the cooler to rest on, and attach it to the base frame. Enclose the base by attaching fence planks all around.
Drill a hole in the side of the stand for the cooler drain to fit through and add a spigot. Screw fence planks across the top of the cooler lid and join it to the base with hinges.
Finally, sand and stain your cooler stand and add the wheels and handles. You can also add a shelf under the cooler or double the size of the cooler base to add a storage cabinet.
