Use These Clever Ideas To Make Your Small Garden Look Bigger
By CAROL BENTON
Less Is More
A garden cluttered with too many plants and furniture looks small and congested. Use a few items of compact or transparent outdoor furniture to open up the space.
Keep the layout simple with open, grassy areas. Create an expansive feel with uncluttered pathways flanked by a limited selection of plants in different textures and heights.
Borders are a visible focus that make a garden seem smaller. Create the illusion that the garden continues infinitely by camouflaging boundaries with plants.
Full, leafy plants such as a hedge of privet or yew shrubs create depth, while tall evergreen shrubs like Arborvitae or juniper at the edge of the garden draw the eye upward.
String lights create vertical space; pathway lights impart a sense of movement; and ground-level up-lights illuminate trees to draw attention to the entire garden.
Instead of lots of little pots, get a few large pots and grow a limited variety of boldly sized plants, making a statement that visually enlarges the space.
Include a few small, potted trees and large shrubs to add height. Layer foliage textures with the larger potted plants positioned toward the back to create a sense of depth.
To create the illusion of space, install a large mirror on a wall where it will reflect a lush and preferably elongated stretch of the garden, magnifying the space.
