We Tried 5 DIY Grout-Cleaning Methods But Only One Delivered
By VALERIE GOLIK
The Classic
This internet favorite combines ½ cup baking soda, ¼ cup hydrogen peroxide, and 1 teaspoon dish soap. Use a spray bottle to easily apply it directly onto the grout.
The original formula recommends leaving the solution for a few minutes before scrubbing and rinsing, but if you’re batting tough grease and grime you need to let it sit for longer.
The No Scrub
This DIY cleaner uses oxygen-based, non-chlorine powder bleach and water to create a bubbling mixture that can be left on the grout for up to 30 minutes before rinsing.
While this hack certainly saves some elbow grease on scrubbing, it does need to be sprayed with water every couple of minutes to ensure it doesn’t dry out and become ineffective.
The Old-Fashioned
Though considered a product of a bygone era, borax has endless uses — like cleaning grout. Mix ⅓ cup borax with ½ cup baking soda and hot water to create a paste.
Using gloves to protect your hands, smear the paste onto the grout and let it sit. While it’ll make some impact on the grime, a good deal of scrubbing is needed for real results.
