What Home Depot Employees Won't Tell You
By EMILY KAMMERLOHR
Price Match
Home Depot can price match any item if you bring written proof of the price into the store or reach out to customer service and provide proof digitally for online purchases. You'll even be given an additional 10% off the price if you price match in person or receive free shipping online.
Plant Receipts
Home Depot has a 365-day return policy on any live plant from their garden center, so even if you don’t have a green thumb, you can buy without fear. Just bring in the tattered remains of your plant, and you can use the refund to reinvest in your garden or take on another project.
Rental Equipment
There’s no need to run out and buy heavy equipment for a single project, as the Home Depot corporate website has all the terms and conditions for renting heavy equipment on a case-by-case basis. You'll just need to be over 18, have a state-issued ID, and have a credit card to cover the deposit.
Purple Lumber
In your local Home Depot, you may find a bin near the back of the lumber section that contains wood with purple paint marks on it. This lumber is typically up to 70% off, and though it contains miscut pieces and other bits of unwanted wood, you may find the perfect piece.
Discount Paint
Home Depot has a section called “Oops!” where they sell returned paint for significant discounts. All you have to do is ask at the counter in the paint department, and you may be able to find a gallon for as little as $5 or a pint for just $1.
