Why Queer Eye's Bobby Berk Warns Against Putting A Rug Under Your Sofa
By ALEXANDRIA TAYLOR
Certain things are obvious when it comes to ensuring your area rug is an asset to your room, like color, print, pile, and size. However, placement is an aspect designers differ on.
Most experts agree that a living room rug shouldn’t be completely under a sofa, but designers have different ideas about whether to place it partly under or in front of the sofa.
In an interview on the "Rachael Ray Show," Bobby Berk, interior designer and star of Netflix's "Queer Eye," explained why he disagrees with having the sofa’s front legs on the rug.
"It gets dusty; you can't vacuum it," Berk told Ray, explaining that he prefers placing the rug just in front of the sofa legs. "I like having it usually about right at the edge."
This also tricks the eye into seeing the room as larger, especially in narrow living rooms. However, keep the rug no further than 5 inches from the sofa to maintain cohesion.
Berk acknowledged that you may want to put the sofa’s front legs on the rug to get it out of the way of traffic or "you're gonna wear that rug down and [it won’t] last as long."
