Why Seeing A Dragonfly On Your Hummingbird Feeder Is Cause For Concern
By KATE NICHOLSON
Seeing a dragonfly on your hummingbird feeder is cause for concern because dragonflies, known for their impressive hunting skills, are capable of attacking and preying on hummers.
Though initially considered an urban legend, there are now documented cases of common green darner dragonflies attacking hummingbirds, possibly in an effort to protect themselves.
These attacks are likely when hummingbirds, especially smaller or migrating ones, are exhausted and lack the strength to defend themselves against the aggressive dragonflies.
While these incidents are few and far between and not a serious cause for concern, they highlight the occasional risk dragonflies pose to hummingbirds.
