Why You Should Avoid Using CFL Light Bulbs At All Costs
By ROGER ADLER
Compact fluorescent light (CFL) bulbs, once popular for their energy efficiency, now carry significant drawbacks that make them less appealing compared with other lighting options.
Firstly, CFL bulbs emit harmful ultraviolet radiation linked to a range of health issues, including dizziness, eyestrain, and more severe conditions like cataracts and skin cancer.
These bulbs also tend to flicker, especially as they age, potentially exacerbating conditions like migraines and light-sensitive epilepsy, making them unsuitable for close-up use.
Moreover, these bulbs contain mercury, a toxic substance that can be released into the environment if the bulb breaks, posing significant health risks to humans
and animals.
Other disadvantages include their harsh light, reduced lifespan and efficiency with frequent switching, slow warm-up times, and poor performance in
cold temperatures.
Given these issues and the availability of superior alternatives such as light-emitting diode (LED) bulbs, avoiding CFL bulbs is recommended for both health and practical reasons.
