Why You Should Plant Sweet Alyssums Near Hibiscus In
The Garden
By A. R. HOPKINS
Pair hibiscus and sweet alyssums to maximize the strengths of each flower. Hibiscus has showier blooms while lacking a fragrance, which alyssum makes up for with its sweet scent.
Both plants prefer moist soil with good drainage and full sunlight, and should be planted well before the summer heat. While late to bloom, they will last until late in the season.
Sweet alyssum’s tendency to spread gives hibiscus ground cover that serves as an attractive mulch. Consider planting a variety of white and cream flowers to complement each plant.
Each requires semi-aggressive pruning and an extended-release fertilizer in spring. Hibiscus needs more water, so be careful not to overwater your alyssums while you’re at it.
