You have a variety of options when it comes to displaying your plants in and around your house. Decorative planters are a popular choice that allows you to add flare to your space while keeping your plants contained. There are enough planters on the market to fit nearly any aesthetic, but they can get pricey. High-quality options can cost upwards of $100. Luckily, you can DIY a trendy wooden planter from clothespins for a fun and affordable alternative to more expensive options.

A TikTok video shared by @bonnieblings shows how easy it is to build this clothespin planter at home. To complete this project, you will need a pack of clothes pins, wood glue, an L-shaped ruler, small rectangular and square crafting wood blocks, penetrating wood stain, and circular wooden feet to go on the bottom of the planter. You should be able to pick these items up at your local home improvement and craft stores. You can also find them online if you prefer to have them delivered. TikTok's clever DIY planter project is beginner-friendly and a great way to score a stylish home decor piece for a fraction of the price.

How to build a clothespin planter

Start by grabbing and disassembling one of your clothespins. Next, apply your wood glue to the outside of the two clothespin halves. Flip the two pieces around and glue them together. Your planter walls will each be comprised of two columns of clothespins. Once you build both of your columns, you will need to glue the pointed sides together to create a wall. In the end, you will end up with four clothespin walls in total. Use the L-shaped ruler to ensure the walls are all the same size.

Use rectangular crafting blocks to build the bottom of the planter. Apply penetrating wood stain to the finished wooden planter components and glue each piece together to form a square. Add four small square wooden blocks inside to help stabilize your plant, and attach the four round wooden feet to the bottom.

Although @bonnieblings leaves the planter plain, you can always get more creative. You may choose to paint the planter a bold color or pattern. Wooden cutouts are also a great option that would allow you to add more texture and dimension. Amazon sells a 100-piece wooden cutout set with floral shapes, butterflies, and birds. You could easily paint these pieces and glue them onto your planter to give it more character.

You will need an additional pot for your plant

Some planters allow you to lay your soil and plant down directly inside without placing both in a separate pot first. Remember that this clothespin planter has holes and gaps throughout, so you must ensure the plant you put inside is already in a pot. The pot will be hidden inside the planter, so you can skip out on the pricey decorative options and purchase a cheap piece instead. You may even already have a few spare pots you could use with the planter.

If you do not have a pot that will fit in the clothespin planter lying around the house, you can purchase one from Amazon. It offers affordable options, including a 7-pack of plain black or white planters. They come in different sizes to fit inside your clothespin planter regardless of how large or small you make it. The planter in the video appears relatively small, but you could make it larger by using more clothespins and crafting blocks.
