How To Choose The Right Rug Size For Your Queen Bed

While any room could benefit from a rug, two rooms almost always need one: the living room and the bedroom. If you have a queen-sized mattress in your bedroom, perhaps you're wondering what size rug you should choose. When buying this design element, size is more important than style and appearance, as one that's too small will look cheap, while an extra oversized piece could completely overtake the design.

The best way to choose the right rug size for a queen bed is to consider the square footage of your room. The smallest bedroom that could fit this mattress is 10 x 10 feet, but it may be more spacious, in which case you could accommodate a larger area rug. Once you've measured your space, subtract 1 foot from each side, which will give you the maximum length and width measurements you could choose (as it would allow the rug to lay 6 inches away from the walls). However, most people decide upon one with smaller dimensions than the maximum, as they don't want their entire floor to be covered.

Rug size options

As a general rule, your rug should extend at least 2 feet out from either side of your bed, as this will give you enough space to stand on the surface. Because a queen mattress is 60 x 80 inches, the smallest size you could choose to fit these requirements is a 6 x 9 foot. Some say that a 5 x 7 or 5 x 8 could also work, but be cautious, as these could end up looking too tiny. Only utilize any of these options if you have a compact bedroom, as you don't want the edges of the rug to be too far away from the walls.

If you have a larger bedroom, opt for at least an 8 x 10 or a 9 x 12; if you really want to make the rug a focal point in the space, go even bigger with a 10 x 12 or a 12 x 14. On the other hand, those with a limited budget or who like the look of smaller rugs could utilize two runners instead.

How to lay out your rug

Once you've chosen the ideal size, you'll need to determine the right placement of the rug in your bedroom. All bedroom rugs should be placed perpendicular to the length of the mattress so that they extend out far enough on either side of the bed. However, those using runners should simply place them on either side, parallel to the mattress.

If you decide upon a smaller size, such as a 5 x 7, 5 x 8, or 6 x 9, place it underneath the bottom two-thirds of the bed and only have it under the two legs at the foot of the mattress. This will allow it to extend past the foot of the bed, which will make it more visible. If you're using a larger rug, you have two options: either have it only lay underneath the bottom two-thirds or keep it up near the headboard, in which case you could put your nightstands on top of it. If it's completely underneath the bed, make sure the edge of the rug is still about 2 feet away from the wall.
