100 Day Dream Home's Mika Kleinschmidt Admits She Has One Grout Regret From Season 2

While Brian and Mika Kleinschmidt are used to quickly building homes for their clients, for the season finale of season 2 of "100 Day Dream Home," they actually built their own house. They faced a couple of challenges during this project, including mixing Brian's farmhouse style with Mika's coastal vibe. They also had to stay under their $700,000 budget, while still fulfilling the wishes of their daughter, Jade, one of which was a backyard pool.

A year after they completed their build, they admitted that the compromises they had to make along the way were challenging. "We're our own worst clients, but we borrowed all of our greatest ideas and made them work. Our house is definitely functional for us," Mika explained to HGTV. However, while she does love their home, there is one thing she would change: the grout in the primary bathroom. "I might not have done white grout in the bathroom," Mika said, to which Brian replied, "And I might be re-grouting the bathroom this afternoon."

Where Mika uses white grout in the bathroom

In their primary suite's bathroom, Mika Kleinschmidt's goal was to create a relaxing oasis, and she did just that. When Mika's mother entered the room, she said, "Oh my goodness ... it's like a spa, it's beautiful." Further, while most of the room has a coastal style, they also brought in small details pertaining to Brian's farmhouse look, including a rustic wood bench.

Mika decided to cover the entire back wall, which has two openings into the shower, with white, wavy tiles. These match the hardware on the vanity, giving the space a fully coastal look that mirrors the waves just outside their window. They also used white tiles in the shower as well, though these ones have a different shape and size.

Between each of the white tiles on both the wall and in the shower, Mika included white grout, which makes the walls look like one slab of material since you can't easily see each individual piece. While this works to create an airy design that appears luxurious, there are also some problems with these design choices.

Why white grout may not be the right choice

While Mika Kleinschmidt doesn't specify why she thinks white grout may have been the wrong choice, there are a few reasons why this may be the case. First, white grout is difficult to keep clean, since it can easily stain. While this is more of a concern when used on the floors, it can also be hard to keep clean even on the walls, especially if the bathroom is used every single day.

Second, this color choice also gives a white tiled wall a fully cohesive look. While some may desire this, others may want the individual tiles to stand out more, and a darker color would do this phenomenally.

Similarly, using white grout between white tiles can also hide the design of the tiles. In the case of the Kleinschmidts' bathroom, this means that the wavy texture blends into the space instead of becoming a prominent focal point, which may have been Mika's desire. Finally, because both the shower and bathroom walls are covered in white tiles and white grout, this makes the space look a bit one-dimensional, while a darker color would provide a bit more interest and personality.
