Contestants Explain The Hardest Part Of Competing In The New Season Of HGTV's Battle On The Beach

HGTV's "Battle on the Beach" comes with its fair share of challenges for contestants. They have to make their design stand out, stay within their $90,000 budget, and ensure that every update increases the home's return on investment. While these are all difficult things to overcome, there's another aspect that makes it even more challenging: the tight time frame.

According to Season 3 contestants Ben Argall and Pete Meldrum, friends from Ishpeming, Michigan, this one aspect is what made the show so much harder than they had anticipated. "I thought it was going to be easier than everyday work, but it actually turned out to be harder," Meldrum told local Michigan news channel TV6 (via Upper Michigan Source). "It was a lot to take on in the time frame, but it was a lot of fun and I met a lot of people." He continues, saying, "If there's one thing I learned through the experience, it's definitely time management, with so many moving parts on the show and the ball rolling so fast, really scheduling and budgeting time and stuff is kind of a big thing."

What makes the time frame so tight?

Just like on previous seasons of HGTV's "Battle on the Beach," the contestants will remodel a two bedroom, two bathroom house in just six weeks. To compare this to a typical full home renovation, coming up with the design can take anywhere from one to three months, while the actual construction can take three to nine months. Because they have to cram both these steps into a small fraction of the typical time frame, and make it ready to showcase on television for millions of people to watch, this can be quite a stressful task. Additionally, as with any renovation, there's bound to be unforeseen problems that will need to be overcome.

Something else that makes the time frame so tough is that specific challenges have to be completed by the end of each week. For the first challenge, contestants will design the dining room, trying to impress the judges with their unique style. In subsequent weeks, challenges will focus on other spaces in the home, such as the living room, bedrooms, bathrooms, and outdoor living spaces.

Season 3 of HGTV's "Battle on the Beach" premieres Sunday, June 4 on HGTV and YouTube TV.
