How Many Mirrors Are Too Many In One Room?

While mirrors are essential in the bathroom and walk-in closet, they can also be used throughout the home as a decorative item. Wherever mirrors are used, they make the space feel larger and brighter by reflecting natural light from a window on the opposite wall. They could also replace artwork and become a statement piece in a room's design. However, is there such a thing as too many mirrors in one room? And if so, what's the maximum number you can use in a space?

While there are differing opinions about this, most agree that one mirror is plenty for a room. This is because using more than one mirror can cause a room to feel cluttered, as they will all reflect the area around the space and could also create a glaring effect. Another negative side effect of too many reflections is that it could cause those in the room to feel uneasy. This is especially true when the pieces are hung on opposite walls, as they'll be reflected into one another and could create a "mirror tunnel" that feels disorienting.

Exceptions to this mirror rule

Although most recommend using one mirror per room, there are a few exceptions to this, as it sometimes makes more sense to use two or more. For instance, if you have two vanities or sinks in your bathroom, adding two identical pieces above them may be necessary. Another practical exception is if you have a walk-in closet or changing room with two separate areas, one for dressing that requires a full-length mirror and another for doing hair and makeup.

There are also some instances where using more than one mirror as a decorative item may look better. If you're replacing a large piece of artwork, you could include a pair or a group of three matching mirrors along one wall. Another exception is if you want to create a gallery wall of mirrors, which is typically made up of decorative pieces with unique borders. However, whenever you use multiple mirrors in a room, placing them on the same wall is almost always best. The only exception to this is if the space is very large, as they won't reflect one another.

How many mirrors to place in each room

As stated before, when deciding how many mirrors to place in each room, you'll find that most spaces only need one, such as the entryway, kitchen, small bathrooms, and walk-in closets. However, other areas of the home could benefit from including multiple mirrors, beginning with the living room. If you have a cramped living space, using two or three mirrors could help make the room feel larger and brighter as they can bounce the light around the space.

Those with a larger living room could even benefit from adding more than three and using them to create a stunning gallery wall or a layered look above a fireplace. The bedroom is another room that could have more than one mirror, as you may have a full-length option in the corner and another as a decorative piece. If you want to make the room feel brighter, placing one behind each nightstand lamp will reflect the light into the room.
