Nate Berkus Breaks Down The 5 Essential Components Every Small Bedroom Needs

Your bedroom should be a tranquil place where you can relax. But when you have a small space, it can be difficult. "In a small bedroom, you don't have the square footage to make a lot of decisions," Nate Berkus says in an interview with Homes & Gardens.

The interior designer, who also stars on HGTV's "Nate & Jeremiah Home Project" alongside husband Jeremiah Brent, knows how to design a beautiful bedroom that evokes peace. However, Berkus knows the challenges of working with limited space. "What you're limited to is your bed, your bedding, your bedside tables, and your lighting. You need to take your time with those four decisions," he told the magazine.  Along with those elements, Nate Berkus also suggests that homeowners focus on repeated motifs for their small bedrooms. These five elements can be customized to fit any decor style or bedroom size, allowing anyone to make this strategy work for their home. With careful decision-making, you can have a beautifully styled room even if you're lacking in space.

Must-have elements

When it comes to bedding, investing in your sheets is always a good idea. That doesn't necessarily mean monetarily, but rather in good quality materials. In general, you'll want to look for breathability to help keep you maintain a proper temperature while sleeping. Cotton and linen are two of the most breathable materials and are good at regulating temperature. As for the bed itself, Berkus explains to Homes & Gardens that scale is important. A bed with a smaller frame won't overwhelm a small room.

Most furniture for a smaller bedroom should be on a smaller scale so as not to take up too much space in the room. For night tables and lights, Berkus suggests branching out to where your source them. "I'd recommend going vintage with your night tables and bedroom lighting if you can. You can find a pair of beautiful bedside lamps or a custom shade in a design you really love from Etsy." These unique pieces can make a major statement even when you're designing for a small space.

Berkus says the last element small bedrooms can use is repetition. "I love repeating. Repeat a headboard — that is the same wallcovering — that is the same as the drapery in your window." Use repetition with color, pattern, and texture to help tie multiple elements together throughout the room.
