TikTok's Genius IKEA Daybed Trundle Hack Turns It Into A King-Sized Bed

Whether you're planning on creating a bed that lets your pets snuggle up for the night without being on your mattress, or the perfect sleepover-friendly room for your kids, IKEA's SLAKT trundles are about to become your new best friend. As seen on Champagne Chaos' TikTok, placing two of the beds side-by-side is a great way to create a massive sleeping area. Fair warning, though: this DIY is far from cheap.

Champagne Chaos' Annie Williams started by placing two SLAKT trundles ($349 each at IKEA) next to one another. From there, she created the look of a singular bed by screwing on headboards. Using one at the head, and one at the foot, Williams revealed on her blog that she needed the boards to be 82 inches wide. Unfortunately, that meant there weren't a ton of options, though Bed Bath & Beyond offers one in a shade of gray for around $195.

Adding head and footboards to the bed weren't the only things Williams did to turn two trundles into the epic king size trundle. She also sourced fabric that matched her headboards, secured it to the inside of the trundle for a completely seamless look, and covered up the sides using fabric repair adhesives. There's no denying the finished look was stunning. However, as Williams herself admitted, it was hardly the most cost-effective project. That said, while this hack is unlikely to ever be low-cost, there are some ways around the expense.

There are ways to try this hack on a tighter budget

Spending a ton of money on this king size trundle bed got you thinking this hack is unattainable? Think again. There are a few swap-outs you can make to help it become slightly more affordable. For starters, part of what makes 82-inch headboards so expensive is that they're hard to come by. By opting to DIY your own headboard, you can get around some of the cost. Plus, by buying your own fabric (head to your local fabric store for lower prices), you'll also be able to use it for that seamless appearance inside the trundle.

As for the fabric repair patches, there are cheaper alternatives to the product Champagne Chaos used, too. While hers cost nearly $18 for a 40-inch roll on Amazon, the site also stocks similar options at around $14 for a 60-inch roll. It still won't be cheap, but it'll certainly save a few bucks.

Besides the structure itself, other expenses you'll need to factor in relate more to bedding. You'll need four mattresses (starting at around $74 each on Amazon). Plus, because you're using two twin beds to create the look of one, you may want a bed bridge (around $38 on Amazon). However, that's not strictly necessary, so if things are becoming too costly, skip it. Again, doing so won't make this a budget-friendly project, but if a king size trundle is what you're after, you can do it at a lower cost.
