Ways That AI May Make Doing Your Laundry Easier In The Future

It seems like everywhere you turn, you see a new way to incorporate AI into your daily life, from smart robot vacuum cleaners to a fridge that notifies you when you're out of butter. If these AI features astound you, then hold on for the next wave of AI enhancements. Now, AI is ready to help you make the never-ending task of laundry easier. Manufacturers like Samsung and LG now embrace AI to help streamline laundry tasks with smart sensors for analyzing types of fabric, soil level, load size, and other factors. The machines can then adjust accordingly to account for cleaner clothes every time you run your machine.

A new relationship with Samsung and Unilever, the parent company of the Dirt Is Good brand, may further enhance the possibilities with your laundry. The brands have a new partnership to study laundry technology and discover how to make laundry more convenient for everyone. Unilever has already tested the Samsung Bespoke AI washing machines with Persil's Wonder Wash, a detergent specially designed for 15-minute wash cycles. While the partnership is new, AI features are already present in various washing machines and dryers on the market now, ready to help get rid of what everyone gets wrong when doing laundry.

Using AI to take the guesswork out of washing clothes

A lot of questions surround laundry, concerning everything from how much detergent you actually need per load to whether hot water or cold water is best. Samsung is one of the leaders in AI technology for washing machines, but other brands may continue the trend. If you've ever hurriedly thrown in a load of dirty clothes or linens and pondered what the soil level setting on your washing machine means, AI can help fill in the answer. For example, the Samsung 6.0 Cu Ft. Smart Dial Front Load Washer can learn your preferred wash cycles.

Sensors examine fabric type and color, then adjust detergent use, water temperature, and the cycle length to account for these aspects. LG says their technology, AI DD (Direct Drive)  in its LG WM8900HBA 5.2 Cu. Ft. Black Steel Front Load Washer uses a database of fabrics and wash patterns to determine the best approach for your wash for clean, undamaged clothes. The brand promises 18% more fabric protection as AI alters the setting for a gentler cycle if needed.

In addition to helping you wash your clothes quicker and more efficiently, AI-enhanced washing machines aim to learn your washing habits and change settings to optimize performance. It also helps with energy efficiency, with the aim to save you money in operation costs and time. LG claims you won't have to manually measure your detergent and potentially use more than you really need. The manufacturer's machines feature 6 Motion Direct Drive, which replicates washing fabrics by hand, distilling the process into six motions: Tumble, swing, filtration, rolling, scrub, and stepping. Samsung is also poised to help you save money with their AI Energy Mode, a special setting that uses AI intelligence to make adjustments in power consumption.

Drying clothes can be more efficient with AI features

Of the laundry cycle, sometimes the most frustrating part is the drying, especially if you feel mystified by the dryer setting panel. What does air fluff mean? What are the best settings for jeans? What dryer setting can shrink clothes? These worries may be a mere memory with the AI features arriving in clothes dryers. In addition to the AI capabilities in washing machines, the new wave of dryers will also use sensors and adjust aspects of drying, such as time, for optimal performance.

On the Samsung 7.5 Cu. Ft. Smart Dial Electric Dryer with FlexDry,  there's an option to call up your dryer's most frequent cycles and settings, so you can just load your clothes, tap OK, and let the machine get to work. For those of us plagued with continually running a cycle to find out it's not quite dry yet; this might be a helpful feature. Similar to Samsung AI washers, the dryers feature AI Energy Mode to help detect plus alleviate energy waste by changing water temperature and cycle length.

You can even get a report of real-time hourly, daily, weekly, and monthly histories per device. LG dryers also examine the dryer contents with AI to detect the laundry's humidity, as well as weight and material to account for the best settings in drying. While they can't order you a pizza solely by you thinking of it (yet), these new AI features making their way to our homes may make a hard task easier or at least smarter.
