Help Keep Weeds At Bay With This Succulent Ground Cover
Growing beautiful ground covers is one of the best ways to make sure you can spend more time enjoying your garden and less time weeding it. While many plants, including annuals, can be used as weed suppressing living mulch in summer, it's nice to have a ground cover that is perennial and evergreen. This is where 'Angelina' sedum (Sedum rupestre 'Angelina') truly shines. The beautiful low-growing succulent doesn't just prevent weeds and bring color to your garden in warm months, it's on the clock year round.
With a height of only a few inches and an impressive ability to spread and form weed-stopping mats, 'Angelina' sedum is an ideal addition to the front border of gardens. It even boasts pretty yellow flowers in the summer months. Even without its flowers though, it's a stunning plant, with yellow-ish green foliage, which can turn a pinkish color in colder months. Winter interest doesn't get much more beautiful than that.
Using and caring for 'Angelina' sedum in the garden
Because 'Angelina' sedum is hardy in zones 5 through 8, it, unlike many other succulents, is a great option even in colder regions. It still possesses the impressive drought tolerance that succulents are known for, as well. Like other drought tolerant ground covers, is perfect for anyone trying out xeriscaping, or just trying to lower their water usage.
'Angelina' sedum can grow well in both full and part sun. Anyone in need of a ground cover for a shade garden will need to look elsewhere though. 'Angelina' sedum also isn't the right option for gardens that tend to be wet or waterlogged, as it requires well-draining soil. The soil doesn't have to be particularly fertile though, making 'Angelina' sedum the perfect plant for rock gardens and gravel gardens. Unlike some plants which are just too aggressive to make good garden additions, 'Angelina' sedum manages to be tough without becoming aggressive. Because it roots wherever it touches the ground, it can easily be divided, making it a breeze to propagate this succulent and share it with friends and neighbors.
