Fixer To Fabulous Stars Warn About Following Current Trends When Designing Your Home
Home design trends can be a fun and interesting thing to keep track of. We would know, given the number of inspiring interior design trends we've tried over the years. But when it comes to home decor trends, you should also know that what's trending shouldn't be the main guide of what you do and don't add to your home. Jenny and Dave Marrs, the celebrity renovators behind HGTV's "Fixer to Fabulous," know this better than anyone — in fact, it's advice they give to homeowners.
"We are not at all focused on trends because we want our homeowners to make their homes something they love," Jenny told The Tennessean. Something that many people get wrong about interior trends is thinking that they're the be-all and end-all of home design; they're there to give you new ideas and inspiration, and show you layouts that you might not have thought of before. Some trends will be practical for your home and others just won't work for you. But if you try to follow every single design trend, your home will lack personal style and self-expression.
This also means that there will always be something that needs remodeling. Home design trends are constantly changing because designers are seeking out new ways to help others express and define their styles, not because you personally should be painting your walls and redoing your cabinets every other month. The Marrs agree that you should be using design trends as inspiration to get a sense of what you really love. Define that style, incorporate it into your home, and you'll be left with a space you can cherish for a long time.
Don't worry about your home's resale value, either
Another common trap that Jenny and Dave Marrs see homeowners fall into is refusing to change their homes at all out of fear that they could end up losing resale value. While this is certainly something you can consider when you know you want to sell your home, it's not something that should be constantly on your mind as a homeowner, according to the Marrs. "It's OK to make your home yours. Go ahead and take a few design risks if they make you happy," Jenny told Better Home and Gardens. Your space should be your own, not the space you imagine potential buyers years down the line might like. Similar to design trends, real estate trends are ever-changing; something that raises your home value one year could drop it within the next decade. It's better to make the changes you love now, and consider the resale value later on.
Of course, that doesn't mean that you can't invest in your home's future at all. Some home trends like high-end window treatments or quartz countertops are known for improving the value of your home. If you love these trends and they also happen to boost your home's value, it's a win-win. But don't avoid painting your walls or redoing your cabinetry just because you're not sure how your home will sell down the line, or else you'll never have a space that's truly your own. As the Marrs know, it's about walking the line between freely changing your decor and also cultivating a sustainable space full of long-lasting style.
