Make A Hanging Shelf Perfect For Skinny Spaces With A Dollar Tree Hack
Hanging or suspended shelves are a great way to utilize the vertical space in your home. Without the need for bulky shelf brackets, you can install these shelves almost anywhere. And the best part? You don't have to spend tons of money buying something brand new. Instead, you can easily create a stylish hanging shelf with a few simple Dollar Tree products. This fun and easy DIY project produces the perfect skinny shelf and makes it easy to create more storage in a tiny home. All you need are two Crafter's Square Wood Planks, four of the Crafter's Square Rectangular Wooden Crate with Handles, wood filler, strong glue, some rope for hanging, and the paint of your choice.
To make this project even easier and ensure each level of your shelf is spaced out evenly, use a square tool or a ruler. When it comes time to hang your finished shelf, you will also need an eye hook. Just remember that these hooks shouldn't be screwed into plasterboard as they could damage your ceiling.
Building and customizing the shelf
With all your materials gathered, it's time to start assembling your new shelf. Begin by removing the rope from your Dollar Tree wood planks. On each plank, fill in one of the rope holes with wood filler. The remaining holes will be used to hang your shelf later. Next, go ahead and paint the boards and the crates in a color of your choosing. Once the paint has dried, use a square tool or a ruler to mark on the planks where you will glue each crate, then glue them into place, with a plank on either side. Just remember to align those two holes you didn't fill in before so that your shelf hangs evenly.
Once everything is securely glued together, string a piece of rope through the holes in your planks, attach an eye hook to the wall or ceiling, and hang your beautiful new DIY up for everyone to see. If you're looking for ways to customize this project, understanding how to decorate shelves is a big help. Outside of styling the shelves you can also play around with different colors, use stencils to add a design, or change up the number of crates you're using to create shelves with more space, while maintaining the narrow aesthetic.
