The Simple DIY That Transforms A Photo Frame Into The Perfect Alexa Accessory

Modern devices certainly make life more streamlined and convenient, but they're not always the most attractive additions to your decor. Whether your interior is mid-century modern, farmhouse chic, or even vintage inspired, home hubs like Alexa and other digital devices could create an eyesore. But there is a very clever way to decorate around these gadgets as you make your house a smart home. In fact, this DIY is so genius in it's simplicity, you may wonder why it hasn't been trademarked. All you need is a thrifted frame (or you can custom build your own) to place over your Alexa home hub screens, elevating them from sleek to chic in a matter of minutes. Rather than trying to hide your Alexa or other digitized screens in your home, why not display them in a truly unique way that keeps them convenient, too?

After measuring the height and width of your Alexa device, check out local thrift stores to find a frame that should fit. Home stores are also a good place to find a frame, although secondhand options are usually more ornate and vintage. If you can't find a perfect fit, consider a frame that's close and just needs a few adjustments. This is where the DIY part of the project will come. You will also want some elastic strips or even a long strip of Velcro to secure the frame to your device.

Turn a thrifted frame into elevated Alexa decor

Once you find a frame that will work, prep it by removing the glass and backing, sanding the frame, and fixing corners or embellishments if necessary. Get creative personalizing the frame to fit your decor with paint, stain, and other materials — you can even reuse ugly picture frames by wrapping them in fabric. If the Alexa won't quite fit, try removing the inner lip of a thrifted frame to make room for a digital screen.

Use a staple gun or superglue to secure a couple inches of elastic strap to the back corners of your picture frame. Then, you can slot the Alexa in the loops so the frame stays in place. This will allow you to prop up your unit anywhere without the Alexa falling out of the frame. Because some home hubs are bulky, you likely won't be able to use the back of the frame to secure your electronic device, hence the straps. If you prefer, you can secure Velcro across each end of the frame.

Depending on where you plan to keep your new creation, you can purchase a frame stand to elevate the display or prop it against your backsplash in the kitchen. If your Alexa or other screens are wall-mountable, you can hang them on the wall with the new customized frame. There may be a lot of things you didn't know the Alexa in your home could do, but becoming one of the most designer accessories may be the biggest surprise of all.
