There are plenty of flower bed ideas to bring your outdoor space to life, but few are as impressive as a bloom-filled 'flower carpet'. Ideal for lining your walkways or surrounding the perimeter of your home, this natural carpet is an easy way to level up your garden this season.  To achieve the lush carpet look, you will need some flowering ground cover. Popular options include petunias (supertunias vista), flower carpet roses, and impatiens (impatiens walleriana). Impatiens are especially good if you need beautiful flowers that grow perfectly in the shade, but otherwise, any good blooming ground cover will work.

Other materials needed to grow your own flower carpet include Miracle Grow soil for in-ground use, some Jack's Classic Feed or other plant fertilizer, a bit of landscaping fabric, and some mulch. It will also be extremely helpful to have a few essential gardening tools on hand such as gloves and a hand trowel. A manual lawn edger can also be helpful for defining the boundaries of your 'flower carpet' garden bed.

Planting your flower carpet

Start this garden project by laying down your preferred type of landscape fabric to keep weeds at bay. Next, cut holes in the fabric roughly 16 inches apart — this is where your flowers will ultimately be planted. Then, at each cut in your fabric, use a hand trowel to dig a hole roughly 7 inches deep and add a sprinkle of Miracle Grow and Jack's Classic Feed to the bottom of each 7-inch hole.

Now you're ready to start putting your plants in the ground. When removing each flower from its nursery container, be sure to give the roots a gentle shake — this will help the roots spread and grow in their new home. Being gentle is vital here to not damage the roots. After placing the flowers in each hole, fill in the extra space with soil and top with a bit more Miracle Grow. Then, throw down a top layer of mulch to help with things like moisture retention, soil quality, and keeping weeds at bay.

To give your carpet-inspired flower bed a visual boost, try mixing a variety of different ground covers together. For example, the dark foliage of Black Scallop bugleweed (Ajuga reptans) next to some bubblegum pink petunias will contrast beautifully, making the flowers pop. If you opted for petunias, they should spread at a relatively quick rate — taking about one growing season to cover your flowerbed. Once your bed has filled out, you'll have a stunning flower carpet to enjoy all season long.
