The Easy Thrift Store Flip That Gives Mason Jars New Life As Beautiful Home Decor
Mason jars are the gift that keeps on giving when it comes to DIY home decor. From lanterns and candle holders to an easy DIY that turns mason jars into cute craft room storage, there are near endless possibilities. And when you add thrifted goods to the mix, the list of possible home decor creations gets even longer. Now you can use two mason jars and a vintage thrift store item to make a stylish DIY planter that serves as beautiful home decor for your indoor plants.
While there are several common household items you can turn into beautiful planters, mason jars are among the easiest and most efficient. For this particular project you will need two mason jars with wide-mouth lids, and a thrifted metal basket or old metal flower box that your jars can fit inside of. Additional materials include paint, real or fake plants, and some dirt. Optionally you can add fake moss and a cute stamp to elevate this DIY craft.
How to make a mason jar planter with an old flower box
To put this DIY planter together, start by painting your thrifted flower box white or a color of your choice. You can use a metal or wood box, just as long as your jars fit nicely inside. Using that same paint, cover the screw bands of your mason jars, setting the inner lid part aside for future projects. When the paint has dried, you can use a custom stamp or stencil to add a small graphic to the front of your box, giving it a personal touch.
Now it's time to add your plants to the mason jars. For real plants, fill the jar halfway with soil, add your plant of choice, and top off with the remaining dirt. For fake plants you can use soil or floral foam to keep your greenery in place. There are a handful of plants that grow well in mason jars including herbs, pothos (Epipremnum aureum), and spider plants (Chlorophytum comosum). If you like, you can add a little bit of fake moss to the tops of your jars for texture and added visual interest. Finally, place your jars inside the box and your craft is complete.
If you're looking for ways to customize this project, use a bit of twine to add a rustic bow to the tops of your jars. Another option is to swap out one plant for a mason jar soap dispenser to create gorgeous bathroom decor. You could also add a string of dollar store twinkle lights to your box to give the planter a warm glow.
