The summer heat can have a major impact on the quality and appearance of your lawn. It can feel like you're stuck in a constant cycle of watering and maintenance, only to find that it still looks dry despite following all of the recommended crucial summer lawn care tasks. So, why does your grass always go brown in the summer? It's a combination of things, including the type of grass, quality of the soil, and the lack of constant water. But, there is a DIY solution that we'd recommend you try to keep your lawn looking healthy this summer.

This DIY solution is a more affordable option than other marketed lawn care products that are available, but it still offers the same impressive results. It's a mixture of three key ingredients: organic kelp fertilizer, which you can order from Amazon for around $40, SUPERthrive vitamin concentrate, which costs around $13, and liquid humic acid, which you can pick up for $37.95. Liquid sea kelp is proven to stimulate soil and help with root development, SUPERthrive is a vitamin-based product, and humic acid enables a better uptake of nutrients, resulting in a healthier lawn.

How to use this DIY solution on your lawn

To make the solution, you're first going to need a container to mix it in. For 4 gallons worth of solution, pour in 8 ounces of liquid sea kelp, 24 ounces of humic acid, and 1 tablespoon of SUPERthrive. Top up the rest with water, then give it a stir to ensure everything is fully combined.

The size of your lawn is going to determine what kind of sprayer you're going to need. For a small to medium sized lawn, a hand pump sprayer like this affordable Harbor Freight tool will be fine, but for a bigger garden, a backpack sprayer that runs on battery power may be a better option. Once you have loaded your mixture into your chosen sprayer, it's time to spray your lawn. Walk up and down your garden with your sprayer set to a wide pattern to soak as much of your grass as possible, ensuring an even coating. Try to walk in straight lines and overlap your path so you can be confident that you've covered the entirety of your lawn.
